17 Sustainable Furniture Brands for an Eco-Friendly Home

From sofa and dining tables to mattresses and home decor, shopping for sustainable furniture can be an arduous exercise. But if you know where to look, there are plenty of eco-friendly options for all kinds of budgets. That’s why we created this list, to help you identify the real environmentally ethical brands from greenwashing marketing.

How to choose your sustainable furniture?

We analyzed dozens of eco friendly furniture brands based on two criteria:

  1. The materials used for both products and packaging. Are they organic, natural, non-toxic, sustainability sourced, or recyclable?
  2. The processes and values of the brand. Are they socially and environmentally ethical? Do they give back? Are they part of green initiatives or programs?

Several not-for-profit organizations deliver certifications to brands that meet their high standards for sustainability. Because they are independent, those agencies provide great unbiased information to the customers. Please note that a company can still be sustainable even if it doesn’t possess the following certifications.

Here’s a simplified glossary of the best eco-friendly certifications.

  • CertiPUR-US: Non-toxic foam.
  • Greenguard Gold certified: Products with low chemical emissions and higher air quality.
  • FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certified: Wood from responsibly managed forests.
  • Oeko-Tex certified: Ecologically safe textile.
  • GOTS or Global Organic Textile Standard certified: Organic textile.
  • GOLS or Global Organic Latex Standard certified: Organic latex.
